Mash Hits # 37 – Some songs i don’t know

It’s monday morning and i could not bare to rework anything too shrill on ears, like slade or busted, so i decided to chose this this weeks uk no 1, mellow/cheesy song from Gotye. Gotye, a unknown artist to me, got to the no 1 spot 2 weeks ago, and re entered again this week, with a quaint little song (until the chorus which has a similar vibe to a catchy bon jovi tune) It seemed to me this song was crying out for a dubbed out remix so i made a remix simply using some loops from the song and some delay fx ..

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know (18/02/2012 & 03/03/2012)

Mash Hits # 36 – The Danesh code

2002 was a shit year for no 1′s. I think the heavy influence of the thriving pop idol tv show had a lot to do with it. Westlife had 2, Will Young had 2, garath gates had 2 + awful tracks like ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’ by blue featuring Elton John and Will Young & Gareth Gates’s ‘the Long And Winding Road’ .. When i started this project i knew i had all this crappy music to deal with & it just means you have to completely destroy the audio or dice it up nice and small or try that little bit harder to get something good out of bad ballad after bad ballad. This is a reworking of former pop idol contestant Darius’s only no 1 hit, It is the first song taken from his debut solo album Dive In. It is rubbish. So I have mangled a tiny winy bit with some max msp patches .. Pretty sure that this remix would have not made it onto the original cd single.

Mash Hits # 34 – This is The Beatles through a ring modulator (We can work it out)

In a knee jerk reaction to the copyright warning i got for uploading the last mash hits entry to soundcloud i really wanted to know if the software that scan’s the tracks uploaded would detect the Beatles if put through a ring modulator. It didn’t so its 1-0 to the Ring Modulator!

Mash Hits # 33 – Maggie is a dancer, a stranger and a dustman

I’m serious as batman when i say maggie is a dustman. This is a mini megamix featuring 3 of my favorite no 1′s, Snap, Lonnie Donegan and Run DMC. There’s nothing to explain about the song really so let’s talk about Rod Stewarts hair. I find it quite amazing, very ahead of his times as uber trendy london folks have exactly the same hair do’s nowadays. in old pictures he looks like a spitting image of Worzel Gummidge, in others a bit like a magical pixie from dungeons & dragons and defiantly more than not like Shirly Carter from Eastenders. in conclusion “His hair is other worldly and that’s the way it is.”

Funnily enough after sampling 129 copyrighted uk no 1′s in the 32 tracks that i have uploaded to soundcloud and never getting caught. Soundcloud’s music recognition software finally got me. I feel like noel edmonds just gave me a ‘Gotcha’ .. I got a message saying that this track “contains copyright material from the track “Rhythm Is A Dancer” which is a copyright work owned or administered by SONY BMG Catalog” so banned the upload

Mash Hits # 32 – Purgatory

I prefer cold meat, cold showers, cold cup of tea and getting a cold to coldplay. They really do not agree with me so i have remixed there no 1 single from last month into a synthetic sloppy hippy jam session.

Mash Hits # 31 – Colonel Mustard did it in the conservatory with the coldplay cd

Yesterday at the brit awards coldplay won best british group. Not my personal choice i would have gone with fastlady. In attempt to remix coldplay i found it impossible to use chis Martin’s voice as i didn’t want to vomit on my laptop so i made a classical sounding piece made using samples of  the starting bars of Viva La Vida.

Mash Hits # 30 – Trumpets of the short forest

For this piece i created a polymeter movement out of the the opening trumpet notes of the Stylistics ‘I Can’t Give You Anything (But My Love)’ ..

Polymeter is when 2 or more time signatures are played simultaneously, after a specific number of beats the two meters will meet. For example, a 3/4 meter and 4/4 meter will meet after 12 beats. In “Toads Of The Short Forest” (from the album Weasels Ripped My Flesh), composer Frank Zappa explains: “At this very moment on stage we have drummer A playing in 7/8, drummer B playing in 3/4, the bass playing in 3/4, the organ playing in 5/8, the tambourine playing in 3/4, and the alto sax blowing his nose” (Mothers of Invention 1970).

The no 1 i sampled was a mediocre 70′s soul sing-a-long song so i was happy to turn it into something a bit more musically interesting
