Mash Hits # 91 – Hey mum .. i discovered the GLIO break

So one day i went hunting for the next big jungle breakbeat in my ‘every uk no 1 single’ folder. After much flicking through songs i found that the opening break of a crappy oasis song was perfect. It’s recorded quality was pretty nice for pitching up and chopping. This track i made with it is not a purist trad jungle song at all, more of a mash up with a jungly rhythm to it … Was fun to make and one of the earliest mash hits i made. I treated the GLIO break as i would the amen break, pitching up and down snares etc etc .. You can download the GLIO break here if ya interested! http://www.freesound.org/people/mashhits/sounds/156065/

note 21/05/12 : I had to reverse engineer this track to find out what i sampled as the ableton live file was saved on a hard drive that recently broke so as i do not have the original ableton live file or notes, the track listing was hard to work out, but 90% sure i listed everything! .. if you hear a sample of a no 1 single in this song and it is not on this list please do let me know! .. first time this has happened but i kinda expected it to at some point!

note 22/05/12 : After uploading this track i was informed that Oasis actually sampled the opening drumbeat from Johnny Jenkins’ version of Dr John’s “I Walk on Gilded Splinters”, so it was not there drummer playing it!!! infact he had just quit the band! ..  After a bit more research i found out that this break has been sampled on many a hiphop tune and most notably on Beck’s ‘Loser’ .. So the only thing i really discovered is that i am a plonker for not doing my research before naming the track!!!

Mash Hits # 89 – 400 seasons

This was the last no 1 of the 20th century and the first of the 21st century and it’s apauling, as is westlife’s discography (probably i never listened to it). To me its music equivalent of a shit sandwich but then again i am coming to realize that a large percent of the no 1 singles from the 21st century are ghastly, rotten and hate worthy. I guess this remix (if you can call it that) is kinda like the musical equivalent of drawing a cock and balls on a picture of a celebrities head in the sun newspaper.I’m embarrassed to upload it but i must and maybe just maybe you can stick it on to annoy the fuck outa someone. Sorry for the swearing but fuck westlife, fuck em!

Mash Hits # 87 – Digested Leggins

This is Daniel Beddingfield’s uk garage classic dismembered and remixed in half a day & i am very happy with the result. It tickles me in all the right places sonically and has a nice menacing industrial vibe to it. I also added a vocal sample from this awful track ‘Don’t Give Up’ by Chicane featuring Bryan Adams. The drum hits were easy to source from the opening bars, the other sounds were samples from random bits of the song, processed, resampled, processed, resampled, processed, resampled… you get the idea!

Mash Hits # 86 – Sip T

When i started making this track a strange feeling came over me, i had experienced this feeling when listening to a piece of music before. That piece of music was ‘r ess’ by Autechre. It’s tonal sequences and notes are fanatically intriguing to me as they make me feel an emotion i am not sure of. Neither happy nor sad, In between scared and at peace.

Responce from Carl Brown via facebook ..
“Yes! It’s a sense of scale that is beyond our comprehension maybe? So a combo of absolute awe, in peace and terror. To me maybe it’s something so epic and beyond us that it goes beyond fear, and enters the realm of “realisation”? The sadness is easy to find initially with the descending tones, but on closer inspection it’s more like wonder. Lynchian!”

Mash Hits # 85 – Freq me

I asked friends on facebook yesterday to chose my next no 1 to remix.. i gave them a choice between a) Freda Payne – Band Of Gold .. b) Boy George – Everything I Own … c) Another Level – Freak Me … d) Spice Girls – Wannabe e) Beach Boys – Good Vibrations .. Another Level won the vote .. So here is a splatter garage version of the saucy song from 1998.
