Mash Hits # 78 – Will Young has jetlag

I’m real tired today so can’t seem to think of anything particularly good to write in this description. In fact i just wanna watch a movie and eat biscuits in bed… Today’s mash hits is fragments of sound sampled from 3 no 1′s made into a mellow piece of music.

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Jacksons 5 – Show You The Way To Go (25/6/1977)
Orson – No Tomorrow (25/3/06)
Will Young – Leave Right Now (6/12/2003)

Mash Hits # 77 – Mysterious afternoon 2

This is a tune i made this afternoon from a peter andre song. I sourced the drum hits from the opening reggae fill and then processed snippets through filters, distortion and reverb to make other sounds. The synth is made from a micro second of one of the drum hits looped and tinkered with.

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Peter Andre – Mysterious Girl (06/3/2004)

Mash Hits # 76 – Kill Phil

This is the only track by Phil Collins i have not used yet, so the name ‘Kill Phil’ was most appropriate. Gave him a good ol’ noisy send off to. Adios bro..

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Phil Collins – You Can’t Hurry Love (15/1/1983)

Mash Hits # 75 – Lost in Kon Tiki

Little bootleg one i made from the Shadows and The Fugees. The Shadows were one of the first 4 piece rock bands and had a total of 69 UK hit-charted singles! There unique guitar sound was originally produced by a combination of American Fender guitars, British amplifiers made by Vox and echo units Meazzi Echomatic tape and Binson magnetic disc. This sound inspired John Lennon and many other uk bands around that time.

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
The Shadows – Kon Tiki (5/10/1961)
Fugees – Ready Or Not 21/9/1996)

Mash Hits # 74 – (Everything i do) I do it for you (16 week mix)

This track is simple, well not the math’s side of it, infact i could not even do the equation necessary as it gave me a headache trying, thanks to mike.p for working it out for me. The idea behind this mash hits entry is to time stretch the song that had the most consecutive weeks at no 1 to that length. The no 1 that is in Guinness book of world records is that annoying song off Robin Hood, prince of thieves. Which was at No 1 for 16 weeks, so 16 weeks is 2688 hours. (Everything i do) I do it for you is 4.05 minutes long. Now there is no way i have enough hard drive space to time stretch the whole song so i decided to make the new song the same length as the original, 4.05. To get that i took 6.20298 milliseconds from after the 16th second of the original and stretched it out to last 4 minutes and five seconds, maintaining the pitch. I also added a stadium reverb fx for prosperity, with a 16 second decay time.

Mash Hits # 73 – Rae

Wrote this when it was real rainy and windy in my atic. It’s a chilly remix of this weeks no one single, a song i know nothing about and feel nothing for.

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe (04/14/12)

Mash Hits # 72 – Gooey nun’s…

Spent a while on this one and it is entirely made from just one second of a Cliff Richard track. I had to bend the audio sideways to get all the percussion and other worldly synthy sounds out the clip.

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Cliff Richard – The Young Ones (11/1/1962)

Mash Hits # 71 – Paperback Downer

Potato’s shouldn’t always be mashed, so today i cooked the potato’s in a different way. Was reading a article on the Bava-Beccaris massacre and Gaetano Bresci earlier. This set the mood for this plundered drone piece.

Made using only samples and/or parts of the following UK No 1 singles.
Beatles – Paperback Writer (23/6/1966)

Mash Hits # 70 – This is The Beatles through a ring modulator (A Hard Days Night)

I just spent the last two and a half hours trying to make the next mash hits entry with no luck at making anything half way decent .. firstly i tried putting all sorts of tracks on top of each other to find the strawberry’s and cream of track combinations, Madonna on Venga boys, Frankie goes to Hollywood on Lady gaga, Bee Gees on top of Billie Piper. They all sounded whack! then i tried making a booty bass track out of U2, this sounded so so bad. In the end i gave into my inner demons and put Beatles through a ring modulator (again) ..

About Mash Hits

The idea for ‘MASH HITS’ came one drunken evening, I wondered what it would be like to re-imagine the entire history of chart music through remixing, bastardizing and reconstructing it. An extreme clusterfuck of music i hate and love fighting each other for attention perhaps?
After i sobered up the idea got formulated into a more cohesive and achievable plan. I would use every uk no 1 single from 1952 until the present day to make a shed load of music.
The UK singles chat is 60 years old on November 14th 2012. Until then I will regularly be uploading new tracks. The rule is to use every UK No 1 single solely; No other samples, synths or sound sources allowed at all.

There are over 1150 tracks that topped the chart so it’s a huge undertaking but most definitely a fun one (excluding having to deal with westlife and steps).

Check back here daily to check out the music I make
